Web Quest Prairie Museum
Web Quest Task

You and your partner will research the geographical areas where prairies once were. You may sketch out a map of your own, or ask me for a printed one, so that you can label the states where prairie used to be. In particular, you will be focusing your attention on short grass and tall grass prairies. Keep these key thoughts in mind as you explore the fun and informative sites I have located on the World Wide Web: How did animals and plants survive in the prairie? How did they interact? Why were insects so important? How did prairies look different as the seasons changed? Why are there so few prairies left in the world today? These questions should be answered in your log.

The Prairie State

Your team will create 3 projects throughout the quest. You will create models by making a diorama depicting the short grass and tall grass prairies, with at least 4 animals and 4 plants named and labeled clearly, with written paragraphs in your log suggesting how the prairie sections of the Space Museum could be designed. Mobiles will be created which will hang from the ceilings in the specified areas. Last, you will create a Claris Slide Show entitled "A Prairie Alphabet," which will be constantly running in the museum for visitors to enjoy.

RESOURCES TO USE: Most of the information you need will be found on the Internet sites which I have provided along the way. You may use search engines to find additional sites at home or in your free time. Encyclopedias and other reference books, the Wilder and George books which I suggested, as well as interviews with your grandparents can add to your prairie knowledge. Personal interviews would be great! Sites and resources that you find on your own will earn Bonus Quest Points for your team!

TASK TIPS: When on a prairie web site, do not rush. Take time to get the feel of each ecosystem, and appreciate the animals and plants and how they inter-relate. Imagine walking on the prairie. Discuss with your partner the smells and sounds you could hear. Become The Prairie!
